Khon Kaen, Thailand’s 5th Official MICE City
The Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau (TCEB) recently signed a memorandum of understanding with Khon Kaen province to promote Khon Kaen as a new, premium destination for meetings, incentive travels, conferences, and exhibitions (MICE) in Thailand.
The agreement coincided with a seminar on “New Innovations for Khon Kaen as a MICE Activity City,” which was hosted by the Faculty of Management Science at Khon Kaen University and which announced the purpose and key points of the memorandum.
Two-hundred leaders from the public and private sectors attended the landmark event where TCEB, in conjunction with Khon Kaen’s tourism board, announced their plans to construct a major exhibition to publicize the province as a leading business-events destination.
In total, more than 350 government offices and local entrepreneurs have joined the mission with the hope of fostering growth in the local economy, and also supporting Khon Kaen as the hub of international conventions and exhibitions in Thailand’s northeast.
Khon Kaen is the largest commercial city and industrial development center in a region which is now the primary focus of the government’s East-West Economic Corridor (EWEC) scheme. The EWEC plans to connect Thailand with four neighboring countries – namely China, Vietnam, Laos, and Myanmar – through Khon Kaen, establishing it as a hub of commerce, investment, and transportation and as the region’s prime destination for Indochina’s and southern China’s convention and exhibition business.
Khon Kaen is also shaping up as the heart of clean tech in Thailand following the government’s approval of a “green” industrial estate; and the province is home to the northeast’s largest convention center (on the campus of esteemed Khon Kaen University), numerous five-star hotels, and an international airport. All these attributes are contributing to its ability to attract investment – and business events – to the city and the province.
